Welcome To
Jesus’ Sermon On The Mount

Study Four

The Holy Spirit is your love for bringing the life and ministry of Jesus into your life and ministry.

This Is Your Power From God To Be Able To Change The World
1 Cor 13:1-3 (NIV) If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.

1 Cor 13:4-13a (NIV) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.

We Need To Wait On Jesus
Love is a characteristic of the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5). It is one of the fruit that He makes available in our character (Galatians 5:22-23). It isn’t something we can do without Jesus causing it to show up on a situation-by-situation basis. As Jesus starts trying to live His life out through us, He causes ideas, feelings, words, and deeds to flow in and through us.

Typically two ideas and feelings come our way, the ones we usually think and feel and the ones He wants us to yield to. Jesus then gives us the power to choose His way of talking and acting, if we want to. We are in the HABIT of yielding to our way of thinking and feeling. That is usually the first thought and feeling we experience. If we wait a few seconds before reacting, Jesus will give us another set of thoughts and feelings. That is the moment we need to stop and pray for His power and wisdom to speak and act on His way of life. That is the way for us to start living the life of Jesus. Ask God to help you to wait a few seconds before you react to things.

Psa 27:14 (NIV) Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD.

Prov 20:22 (NIV) Do not say, "I'll pay you back for this wrong!" Wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you.

Isa 40:31 (KJV) But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.

We Need To See Other’s Perspectives
The love that is being poured into our heart from the Holy Spirit (Romans 5:5), is then lived out by Jesus, as we yield to Him.
The way to yield to it is to allow Him to put us in someone else’s place. He will try to get us to see things from other people’s perspective.

Using the list from 1 Corinthians 13:4-13a, we will have a lot more patience with others, when we see things from their perspective. We will be a lot kinder to them, not be envious of them, not hurt their feelings by bragging or boasting about our superiority; we won’t be prideful or rude to them; we will be moved from being self-seeking to finding ways where everyone benefits.

It is difficult to get mad at them and keep records of every wrong thing they do, when we see things from their perspective. We won’t be glad when evil overtakes them but will want them getting the truth from Jesus. We will find ourselves trying to protect them, trust them, hope for their best, stick with them thick and thin, and never stop praying for them or trying to do whatever it takes to help them.

Rejoice When Being Persecuted
While keeping in mind the Scriptures concerning dogs, hogs, and wolves in sheep’s clothing found in Matthew 7:6; 15, you will be able to put up with a lot of things people do to you. You will be able to look through the defenses they have put up over the years to protect themselves.

You will be able to love them and help them out of their own protection and lead them into trusting Jesus for their protection. You will be able to live the life of Luke 6:32-36 and be able to show the whole world the love of Jesus Christ, your Lord.

Luke 6:27-28 (NIV) But I tell you who hear Me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

Luke 6:29-31 (NIV) If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Luke 6:32-34 (NIV) If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even ‘sinners’ lend to ‘sinners,’ expecting to be repaid in full.

Luke 6:35-36 (NIV) But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
