Love Your Neighbor As Yourself
Mat 7:12 (NIV) So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.

There is so little we can do for others outside of God. A lot of the prayers we pray are from an individual perspective. We see our own needs and we pray for them to be taken care of. God wants us to not only see our needs but also the needs of others.

Phil 2:4 (NIV) Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

We can ask, seek, and knock for others. As a matter of fact, it is better for us to spend most of our time praying and believing for others. If we want others to be praying for our needs, then we will do to others what we want them doing for us. It is so much better for us when people are praying in our behalf. Getting answers from God that others prayed for us is one of the greatest deeds they can do. The compassion that grows in our life as we spend time caring and praying for others is going to fulfill all the Law and Prophets in and through our life and ministry. If we spend a lot of time asking, seeking, and knocking before God for more compassion for others; we can count on that prayer being answered.
As If You Were Them
One of the problems of doing what we would have others do to or for us is the difference between our desires and theirs. If we apply this Scripture from a human effort standpoint, we will be doing things that would make us happy. But, the other person doesn’t want them at all. They aren’t like us.

Asking, seeking, and knocking before God takes us out of our self and helps us care about others. When that happens, we don’t do for others those things that would make us happy. We find out what they need and do them as if we were doing them for ourselves. Many have applied this Scripture from a human perspective and have missed the whole point.

Just because something would be very meaningful to us, doesn’t mean that it will meet the needs of others. Once we start seeing things from other’s perspectives, we do to others what we would have them do to us, if we were them. That can only happen when we spend quality time with God. God has to open our eyes so we can see what those people around us really want. That helps us do to them those things we would have them do to us, if we were in their shoes.
