Jesus is saying several things here:

• First, it is better to lose an eye or a limb than to spend an eternity in hell. I am sure we all agree with that.


• Second, our sin condition is so overwhelming, we would have to take some very drastic measures to even start dealing with it.


• Third, He is our only hope of escaping hell.

If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away.

That hurts to even think about. And, that is exactly what Jesus was trying to do. How important is it not to sin? It is eye gouging and handing cut off important not to sin. Why? So that a person doesn’t end up in hell.

Hell is a place that no one wants to go to even if we had to take very drastic actions to avoid it (which we don’t, praise God!).
